“On their debut LP Cosmic Cash, New Jersey’s Garcia Peoples funnel the energy of their live shows into a cohesive full-length statement. Originally a quartet featuring Tom Malach and Danny Arakaki on guitars, Cesar Arakaki on drums, and Derek Spaldo on bass, they recently added Pat Gubler (PG Six, Wet Tuna) on keys to fully flesh out the group as a deep groove machine, capable of turning on a dime. Built on dueling twin leads, barrelhouse keys, and bubbly rhythms, their songs recall the melodic glory of NRBQ and Little Feat, approximating AM golden radio at it finest. These songs beg to be blasted with the windows rolled down while you cruise backroads trying to avoid the fuzz and have a good time. On your own terms, man.”

Greetings and welcome to the fourth installment of The Way Ahead!

Lea Thomas is a perceptive storyteller whose lyrics are imbued with humility and nostalgia for the beauty and resilience of wild, natural spaces. Her debut album, Want for Nothing, was released on Tacky Records in January 2017.

Erin Durant

"Not to make a horrible pun, but Brooklyn-via-New Orleans singer/songwriter Erin Durant indeed has an “Old Soul,” the name of the song we’re premiering her new video for. She’s inspired by the folk and blues music of an era long before she was born, and her 2016 album Blueberry Mountain — which was recorded live to tape — has a raw sound that hearkens back to decades past as well. Erin plays piano and sings, and the NY Times points out that she actually insists on taking her own 232-pound upright piano to each gig she plays. That should give you an idea of the kind of music you’re getting from Erin, and she delivers it with expertise. Get a taste for yourself by watching the video for “Old Soul” (made by Heidi Ferrell & Aaron Cassara) and streaming all of Blueberry Mountain below. Erin has a new album in the works for 2018."

Jaye Bartell + Relatives, Graeme Daubert

Jaye Bartell + Relatives, Graeme Daubert

Jaye Bartell: Jaye Bartell's songs are poetic yet candid and unafraid, formal but also spontaneous. His lyrics leap and land like dancers and are alive. It may not be apparent at first, but Bartell’s songs are exultations that revel in the often unsteady but always moving life, filled with subtle humor and sincere love. Like the epic panorama on the album’s cover by artist Ursula Gullow, Bartell’s songs push out from the fissure between asphalt and clouds – car crashes and kissing, great gulls and stray dogs, friends and enemies, love and hate, all braided, each defining the other. In a Time of Troublefinds Bartell working with expanded instrumentation and more sonic color. Here his vocals have been honed, hardened, and thoughtfully tempered. There is sureness in his delivery, a paradoxical feeling that nothing is urgent despite the grave urgency of a song’s subject matter. In a time of trouble, a wild exultation…

Relatives: Relatives - Ian Davis and Katie Vogel - met upon arrival to New York City in 2007 and have been singing and writing together since. Over the years, we have been paring down and turning inwards, exploring what can be done with less. We released our second full-length album, Weighed Down Fortune, in November 2017, and have another one on the way in summer 2018!

Graeme Daubert: Graeme Daubert has been playing in Alpenglow since 2010. In 2016 he moved to Boston and thought he was leaving music behind him in New York. As the months wore on, however, he watched a small home studio being constructed in his living room and demos for a solo record starting to take shape. In March 2017 he recorded "On a Harbor Island" in Asheville, NC with his current bandmate, Justin Morris. Since the completion of that full-length album, Graeme has moved back to New York, assembled a band, and reveled in the experience of sharing his songs live.

Louque, Helio Paralax
Jul

8:00 PM20:00

Louque, Helio Paralax

Louque:
LOUQUE is Dustan Louque, a musical auteur traversing the country in his ‘87 Westfalia. He is a Louisiana native born in St. James Parish, yet he got his music start in Brooklyn (2001) in his home studio layering sounds and song over beats. His first album "So Long" caught the attention of a major label. He signed with Lava/Atlantic and released his first record having only played a few live shows prior. This relationship lead Louque into 2 years of touring and selling his music to film.

It is often realized that less is more. Louque felt his own less-is-more calling and he separated himself from the fast changing music/major label industry.

Today he travels and performs year round connecting on a more personal level with fans of his music. He performs solo at times, but often plays and travels with classical pianist Margaret Hebert, a native of Lafayette, Louisiana. A shared love of classical and New Wave music has inspired a new collaboration and they recorded their first song "Beneath The Cherie Moon" in 2016 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35EzZVZhLDQ). The two recently relocated from New Orleans to Lafayette.

Helio Parallax:
With effective explorations in time and space, Helio Parallax presents a sound deeply rooted in spiritual
expression. True analog electronic music (no laptops) with cinematic landscapes (think Blade Runner
meets Miles Davis’ Elevator To The Gallows sound track) anchored by deep dub/hip hop beats with skilled
instrumentation to create an atmospheric landscape coined “Sci Fi Dub Noir”.
Josh Werner (Wu Tang, Lee Scratch Perry, Cocorosie, Higgins Waterproof Black Magic Band) brings a concept
of Sci fi Dub Noir, performing visions of dub, hip hop and free jazz, with production and compositions directly
from a lineage of futuristic collisionist thought. As Bass Player magazine (March 2014) said, “ Josh Werner
has re-emerged with a project that spotlights his masterful dub playing.”
Multi-instrumentalist and producer Takuya Nakamura (Geroge Russell, Arto Lindsey,Cocorosie, Quincy Jones)
blends a new brand of Jazz, lo-fi analog and Hi-fi Digital space techno to his style of composition and
production. His ethereal trumpet playing establishing a cinematic landscape of sound which evokes futuristic
expressionistic moods throughout...
Dub specialist/beat maker Marihito Ayabe (Dub Nomads, Chimp Beams, and Shing02) offers a blend of hip hop
and reggae programming with Atmoshperic Sound Design.

Arthur King (Earlimart) + Doug Wieselman, Hektor Fontanez

Arthur King (Earlimart) + Doug Wieselman, Hektor Fontanez

Arthur King is not one particular person; it is a dynamic art collective, usually addressed as Arthur King & the Night Sea when referring to its 7-piece ensemble. But this time it’s just Peter Walker and Aaron Espinoza, venturing the plateaus of Utah with only each other and their recording equipment. Their new album, Changing Landscapes (Grand Escalante), features field recordings gone adrift in search of something more.

This epic meandering drone album is thoroughly engaging, despite how daunting. With some simple math, one would expect each of the five tracks on this nearly fifty-minute journey to be ten minutes each, but shockingly, one is barely over two. 'Scorpion' is really little more than a sonic purgatory, and it is only enjoyed as such, if at all, if one has persevered through the opening track, 'Western Fence Lizard'. Not that this record was made for everyone; understandably, music that requires such patience is an acquired taste–but we are all capable of acquiring it. Ambient music mimics life in its spontaneity and bliss, and doesn’t ask us to suspend reality.

Arthur King have ushered in more than a simple impersonation of life, though; they use real sounds of nature captured on a trip to Grand Escalante. Some of the most unsettling sounds are the ones that sound most human, whether a pulsing heartbeat ('Zzyzx'), distorted voices ('Cottonwood Road'), or simply the implication that someone is near, felt in the rustling brush which recurs throughout. But then, isn’t the feeling of discomfort what makes us most human? Or more broadly, it is the feeling of self-awareness, in any situation. Feel your humanity deeply, and meditate on Changing Landscape.

Widower + Andrew Victor, Pale Mara

Widower:
New Jersey native, Seattle staple, and off and on again New Yorker, Kevin Large has been making music under the WIDOWER moniker for over a decade. Large’s lyrically driven songwriting is reminiscent of Petty’s more mellow moments. There’s a cinematic sentiment to these songs, like a car in the rain in a Cameron Crowe film.

Dan Friel, Katiee

Dan Friel, Katiee

Dan Friel creates intense, colorful and intricate instrumentals that, for all their complexity, are melodic pop songs. Equally at

home in the DIY scene and the contemporary art world, Friel has been at the forefront of a movement of musicians who create dance music with a clear affinity for the extremes

of noise and metal, eschewing the traditional dance clubs and adhering to the ethics of the underground. On his sophomore Thrill Jockey album Life, Friel uses his surprisingly small arsenal of gear to distort and maneuver his beloved Yamaha Portasound into an expansive sound that is incredibly varied in tone

and texture. This toy keyboard, his first instrument, is manipulated beyond recognition to create songs that are frenzied and epic. Life also has moments that are incredibly sweet, idyllic, and fragile - sentiments that make perfect

sense coming from a new father whose instrument of choice is his childhood keyboard.

3rd - Ben Seretan Group
2nd - Java Joe's Jittery Junction
1st Band: Lynk
DJ - DJ Ron Artest

Ben Seretan:
The confused sound of blood in a shining person. How loud can a whisper get, how quietly can an electric guitar hum? Sweet and tender songs, long zones of tones, brushfire flurries of fingerpicking, ecstatic joy, the occasional disgusting guitar solo and/or guided meditation. Sometimes solo, sometimes with a group, ever thoughtful. Available for listening across an impressive swath of LPs, cassettes, and online releases. Generally in NYC.
Seretan is also the creator of My Life’s Work, a 24-hour long recording / interactive multimedia project, a book of travel writing by the name of Past the Breakers, and a video collage piece shot and scored on a small island in the Pacific called Double Alaska.

Java Joe's Jittery Junction:
The achy breaky ramblings of a caffeine junkie and his well rested family band.

Lynk:
One shimmering voice, syrupy sweet as a televangelist on his knees, drawing a dotted line around a calamity you already feel to be happening. House plants gaining access to sms technology, tower PCs growing gills. Tiny sunglasses. Interconnective melodies gluing together photocopied do-it-yourself manuals made of fronds and blooms and stalks. Hyper / chain. Lynk.

AdHoc Presents has curated a collection of stellar percussionists, DIY composers, rogue drummers, a PhD candidate and "charismatic contemporary bard" for a performance at Wonders of Nature on Thursday, June 14. The three artists presented share an interest in experimentation and exploration of new musical and percussive ideas while also merging elements of indie rock, minimalism, electronica, jazz, and the avant-garde. Always seeking new and unique sonic worlds, the groups blur the lines between traditionally "composed" music, collaboratively-created sounds, improvisation, and generative music creation.

----

"A shining example of the possibilities of percussion. ensemble, et al.'s The Slow Reveal is full of virtuosic performances and detailed post-genre compositions that flow along effortlessly—consistently revealing fresh and inviting sonic ground. If you’ve never listened to a percussion-centric record, this is where to start." —Glenn Kotche (Wilco)

"The Slow Reveal is a slightly sped up film of a flower opening itself up to the sun, each petal and tendril revealing new melodies and nuance and polyrhythm."  —PASTE Magazine

"New York percussion quartet ensemble, et al. refract minimalism through a postrock lens, but stake out their own turf through the corkscrewing rigor of their compositions."  —Peter Margasak (Chicago Reader)

“The Kraken Quartet brings a collective sound that feels larger than life, a sonic boom of energy that shocks the system while remaining intimate with their music” —KUTX

“This band goes all-out with an arsenal of melodic percussion instruments” —WNYC, on The Kraken Quartet

ensemble, et al. is an instrumental band from Brooklyn, NY, who makes lush, sprawling songs using vibraphone, keyboards, drums, and percussion. Formed in 2010 as a new-music chamber ensemble, the years have seen the band step away from the percussion quartet format and embrace a collaborative approach to creating original music. The band employs elements of rock, modal jazz, electronica, contemporary classical, and experimental music in its longform, wordless songs.

The band’s latest album The Slow Reveal—produced and engineered by John McEntire (Tortoise, Stereolab)—was released on Imaginator Records in November 2017. The band self-released it’s first full-length album present point passed in 2014, as well as the EPs When the Tape Runs Out and Sounds of Others—a reimagining of music by Arvo Pärt and Goldmund—in 2011. Music blog I Care If You Listen praised present point passed as “sophisticated pieces reminiscent of post-rock in terms of musical progression, but without all the traditional rock instruments and the density of sounds that they bring.”

A massive force of percussion and electronics, The Kraken Quartet is a genre-crossing percussion group known for its highly energetic and engaging performances. Since their formation in 2012, the group has been featured by publications including WNYC, KUTX, The Austin Chronicle, Time Out New York, I Care If You Listen, and The Ithaca Times for merging elements of indie rock, minimalism, electronica, jazz, and the avant-garde. Currently based in Austin, TX, the group has performed as part of several festivals and concert series, including South by Southwest, Austin Instrumental Music Festival, SoundSpace, Fast Forward Austin, Brooklyn Bound, and NMASS. Advocates for local music, The Kraken Quartet has recently started a regular concert series featuring diverse acts from Austin. Their debut full-length, Separate | Migrate is available now.

Elliot Cole is a composer and "charismatic contemporary bard" (NY Times). He has performed his music with Grammy Winners Roomful of Teeth, Grammy Nominees A Far Cry and Metropolis Ensemble, as well as the Chicago Composers Orchestra, New Vintage Baroque, the Lucerne Festival Academy, and as a member of the book-club-band Oracle Hysterical.  His percussion music has been performed by over 250 percussion ensembles all over the world. In 2017 he was invited by Talks at Google to share his unique approach to music through computer programming. He is on faculty at the The New School and Juilliard Evening Division, and is Program Director of Musicambia at Sing Sing, where he runs a music school for incarcerated men.

Juanma Trujillo, Joggerknot

http://juanmatrujillo.com/
Venezuelan guitarist/composer Juanma Trujillo has been living in New York for four years and has since become
an active member of the jazz, improvised and experimental music scene of the city. Trujillo has developed a playing
aesthetic that embraces many of the idiosyncrasies associated with the electric guitar but manages to create
music that doesn't depend on those practices to succeed.

Juanma Trujillo - Guitar
Kevin Sun - Saxophone
Andrew Schiller - Bass
Matt Honor - Drums

http://www.andrewschillermusic.com/
JoggerKnot is the brainchild of Andrew Schiller. The group explores original compositions influenced by Schiller's love of improvised music, 60's tropicalia, grunge, surf rock. The unique instrumentation of this band, fronted by three tenor saxophones, often yields (pleasantly) peculiar harmonic and sonic textures.

JoggerKnot features:

Alec Harper- tenor sax
Drew Williams- tenor sax
Hery Paz- tenor sax
Aaron Quinn- guitar
Dayeon Seok- drums
Andrew Schiller- bass

Garcia Peoples DeadSummer Residency shows, show number two!

Garcia Peoples Deadsummer Residency shows, show number two!

**C Joynes**
Over the last decade, C Joynes has ploughed a singular furrow through solo guitar, with a body of work incorporating English folk-tunes alongside North & West African music, and lifting proto-minimalist and improvised techniques from the European classical tradition. On his most recent releases, the '33 Chatsworth Rd' EP on alt.vinyl (2015) and ‘Split Electric’ LP on Thread Recordings (2016), he’s currently exploiting the instrument’s potential for placing overdriven garage blues throw-downs alongside the brittle ringing tones of electric folk.

**Elkhorn**
The duo of Jesse Sheppard (12 String Acoustic) and Drew Gardner (Electric), straddles the story of American guitar in the 20th century by digging into deep folk, jazz, and psychedelia. The outcome sits somewhere between the primitive strains of the Takoma school and the electric reveries of Sonny Sharrock, Ben Chasny, or Buddy Guy. Their debut LP was released on Debacle Records in 2017 and is now sold out. Their forthcoming cassette on Eiderdown Records will be released in June of 2018.
