Ka Baird is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist living and working in NYC. She is one of the founding and continuing members of the long running avant psych project Spires That In The Sunset Rise. Described by Jack Rose as a "female Sun City Girls," STITSR have contributed a different slant to the New Folk movement by incorporating various avant-garde and world music influences into their music. Their sound has been compared to the Raincoats, Meredith Monk, Comus and Harry Partch. Their most recent album "Beasts In The Garden" was described by Marc Masters as "some kind of long-lost Terry Riley/Angus MacLise collaboration, equally devoted to divine repetition and center-seeking ritual." Since 2001, they have released eight full length records and several side releases.
Since relocating to NYC in November 2014, Baird has set off in numerous directions apart from Spires with new collaborations as well as honing in on her own solo work. Her current work explores piano improvisation, electroacoustic interventions, extended vocal techniques, physical movement, and her unusual electronic manipulation of the flute. She released an album of piano improvisations through Brooklyn label Perfect Wave "See Sun Think Shadow" in November of 2015 and a tribute record "A Love Supreme" dedicated to John Coltrane through Chicago label No Index in January of 2016. She has toured extensively both nationally and internationally with performances at the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), MoMA PS1 (Brooklyn), Roulette Intermedium (Brooklyn), Issue Project Room (Brooklyn), Cafe OTO (London) and numerous festival appearances with Spires including TUSK (Newcastle, UK), Incubate (Tilburg, Netherlands), and Festival Of Endless Gratitude (Copenhagen, DK). She also co-runs the label and concert organizer Perfect Wave with Camilla Padgitt-Coles.
Wandering shade is the electric guitar trio of Kryssi Battalene, Sarah Louise and Rosali Middleman. All powerful soloists in their own right, together they make music that is freely expressive, intuitive and fierce. Kryssi Battalene has released many solo noise works as Colorguard and has worked as lead guitarist in multiple psychedelic rock outfits, such as Headroom and Mountain Movers. In 2017 both Headroom and Mountain Movers released LPs on Trouble in Mind Records. Headroom have a forthcoming split with Dire Wolves dye in April and a new EP coming out on Ever/Never Records. Sarah Louise is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, composer and producer living in the mountains of North Carolina. Known primarily for her work with solo 12-string guitar (Scissor Tail, VDSQ), she has been praised by Pitchfork as “one of the most exciting figures in solo guitar music” and by NPR as a creator of “new languages” for the guitar. She is also a powerful improviser, performing often with free guitar master Tashi Dorji. Her debut for Thrill Jockey, Deeper Woods, is due in May 2018. Rosali is the solo incarnation of Philadelphia-based singer and guitarist Rosali Middleman. Known most for her songs with rich melodies and emotional depth, she is also a formidable electric guitarist as one-third of the band Long Hots. With open expression that traces her years in folk-rock and experimental traditions, she brings power and solid rhythmic underpinning to Wandering Shade. Her 2nd LP is due in June 2018 on Spinster.
Che Chen & Barry Weisblat:
75 Dollar Bill guitarist Che Chen and home-made electronics wiz Barry Weisblat have shared more than a few stages together but this will be their first public appearance as a duo. What they'll do is anyone's guess but it'll no doubt be informed by time spent together at many a dining room table, as well as jamming in Andrew Lafkas' large ensembles, the 75 Dollar Bill Little Big Band, and various other configurations.
